I had a nice sleep in on Saturday. It's wonderful to wake slowly, drifting in and out of dreams, knowing that there is no rush to be up and about. It's so different than forcing myself out of bed on weekdays, keeping to a strict schedule so that I can be at work on time.

I indulged my lazy streak all morning, then headed to rehearsal after lunch. We had vocal rehearsal with one of the leads and with the ensemble. It was the first time we had heard the music put together and it threw us off a little initially. We worked through all the songs we share with the ensemble and then through the "Ease On Down" theme and the Wiz's songs. We pit singers were disappointed that we don't sing along in "Rejoice" (Brand New Day), but we had a lot of fun practicing the "Emerald City Dance" with everyone. It was a long rehearsal, with the pit singers staying a couple of hours later than everyone else, but we're already seeing lots of improvement.

My friend and I went out to dinner for Mexican food during the two hours we had between the end of rehearsal and the beginning of the show (Oklahoma!). We went to a local restaurant that I really like. We were seated and served very quickly, but it took forever to get our check and convince someone to pick it up and run the charge. I guess we looked like we were out to relax.

We made it back to the theater in plenty of time. We still had about 20 minutes before curtain, so we went for a walk around the neighborhood. It's a small theater, located in a residential area, with tree-lined streets and friendly sidewalks. For the space of about four houses, we had a trio of young birds hopping about and doing short flights to stay ahead of us. When we reached a house with a huge tree in the yard they decided to fly up into its branches and rest for a while. :-)

The show was fun, with a couple of scenes that had been cut from the only other live production I had seen. The man who had been vocal director for our production of The Music Man a couple of summers ago (a big, tall man with a heart to match) was playing Jud. It was very strange to see him playing a bad guy when I know what a sweetheart he is in real life, but he was very convincing. A couple of my fellow pit singers were in this show too - it was fun to see them and hear them sing.

We were greeting old friends and acquaintances outside the theater when the show was over, when one of the performers told the one I was talking with that I was going to be in The Wiz. I told her I was going to be a pit singer, and that I wouldn't be up on stage in costume and dancing. He said that that was the best part. I agreed that it was fun, but that I would enjoy sitting in the pit wearing cotton and linen while he was sweating on stage. He laughed and said that he would likely be wearing leather and spandex.

At that point an elderly woman behind me said "Leather and spandex?" I turned to look at her, with her eyes slightly widened, but a smile on her lips. He explained that we were talking about costumes for the next production. "Ah," she nodded and walked away grinning. I wonder what she ended up dreaming about last night. ;-)

Thank you to those of you who vibed or sent good thoughts my way about the audition. They worked! I'm going to be a pit singer for The Wiz this summer.

*happy dance*
